You would have to be living under a rock to not have noticed the
recent monochrome trend - and not just for Derby Day. Many fashionistas feel
relieved by the revival of this classic yet potentially dramatic combo. No longer must they rethink the power of fluro, and
they are once again allowed to indulge in something a bit more
familiar. Unfortunately there are those who mistakenly believe that
monochrome means any awful combination of black and white is okay. Let me be clear - this is not the case.

One Australian fashion brand I believe is doing monochrome really well this
season is Cue. I'm particularly besotted and yet equally terrified by the white pant suit.
So, undoubtedly some of you may have noticed that it's been a
while since I've blogged about all things fashion. I'm not exactly sure why I stayed away from
the keyboard for so long - work, kids, house, other projects. I guess the reality is, for a time there my
heart wasn't quite in it.

But recently I came upon what can only be described as a call for
fashion help. And so, I have no choice but to don my super-fashionista cape and
come to the rescue with some sage and stern words of wisdom for those of you
ladies about to attend a formal event.
Men were in suits and an array of ties and women frocked up in
everything from LBDs to bright graphic prints.
There were even some floor length numbers (yay for old school
glamour!). I had the pleasure of wearing
a gorgeous tangerine number by Willow with some leopard skin heels from
Oroton. Also in my freshly manicured
hands was a little gold clutch from Colette.

However, to my horror many of the women attending the evening had opted
not for a clutch, or any other sort of evening bag, but were instead carting around a shoulder bag or tote. <span style="font-family: "Arial Unicode MS"; mso-ascii-font-family: Helvetica;">“Gasp!<span style="font-family: "Arial Unicode MS"; mso-ascii-font-family: Helvetica;">”

all rolled into one. Now, as a
self-confessed handbag addict, I acknowledge that even the idea of attending a
special event without having purchased a little bag just for the occasion makes
me break out in hives. However, I also
know that this response is a tad extreme.
Nontheless, there is absolutely no excuse for rocking up to a formal event,
waxed, polished and sprayed, Hollywood tape keeping all your bits firmly in place,
special undies ensuring no VPL (thanks Jockey!), and then lugging around a
shopper tote - even if it is a Louis Vuitton.

Accessories are important.
They have the capacity to pull your whole look together, and as in most other situations,
attention to detail is essential to success.
And these details don't need to break the bank - although there was a
little YSL number carried by one lucky lady at this event that did cause me to turn slightly green with serious designer brand envy. My little gold friend cost a modest $34.95 and I know boohoo has some from $12. And while I am certainly a believer that you
get what you pay for, clutches, wristlets and the like are generally used for a
relatively short period of time, and generally speaking, not on a daily
basis, so here's a great opportunity for some up-to-the-minute disposable fashion.

Go for a little bit of relatively cheap fun, or invest in a classic clutch. It doesn't really matter. Just make sure that when the time comes you're not carting around something that resembles a nappy bag.

recently discovered Dressed for Success, a not-for-profit
organisation that assists underprivileged women increase their chances of
finding employment by developing interview skills, helping put together a functional CV and providing workplace and interview appropriate clothing and
accessories.

I love
this concept for a number of reasons.
Firstly, it's about helping women help themselves and improve their own
lives and the lives of their families, not by simply doling out charity, but by
giving those in need the skills required to break the cycle. Secondly, it acknowledges the vital
importance of self-confidence and the close connection that exists for so many
between appearance and feeling like you can take on the world.

I put out
a call to everyone I knew for handbags that were no longer in use and that
women were prepared to give away to a worthy charity, if only to make room for
a new purchase. The response has been
amazing. As I type there are over 100 handbags sitting in my hallway, ready to be taken to Dress for
Success Melbourne's office. What has
been most beautiful about this process is the stories connected
with these handbags.

A divine
plush, red velvet, leather edged number finished with chunky gold hardware came my
way barely touched. When I commented on its pristine condition the owner told
me how her girlfriend had given it to her for a recent birthday. Unfortunately the birthday was
quickly followed by a falling out between the two. The woman felt such pain over the broken
relationship she could no longer bear to use the bag.

Then
there was the woman who donated a little black JAG number, a gift to her from
her late mother. Her mother had
purchased the bag spontaneously for the woman on their last mother-daughter
shopping trip, three months before she died of cancer. The woman admitted she had never actually
used the bag, but she had kept it because of what it represented; a mother's
love for her daughter, a moment of female bonding, to attempt to express in some way that complex
web of emotions that often defines mother-daughter relationships. The opportunity for her mother's kindness to
now be shared with someone else felt somewhat appropriate she said. A chance to let go without feeling the guilt
that often comes with disposing of an item imbued with sentiment.

There
were bags gifted to wives by husbands who were now very much ex-husbands, and
women who were donating bags they felt belonged to their past, the women
they once were and had made a conscious choice to leave behind.

These
stories made me realise just how intrinsically connected women are to their
handbags. What we sling over our
shoulders are not just something to lug our stuff around in, they are in many
cases much loved and considered reflections of who we are, or who we were when
we purchased them. The brands we favour,
the materials we seek out say so much about who we are, where we have come from
and where we want to head.

There are
those who save up for a Louis Vuitton, viewing it as the crown jewel of their
collection, while there are some who prefer a new and funky Kate Hill every
season. There are women who opt to carry around
a fabric and hessian pouch, viewing their choice as reflective of their environmental
concerns and there are those happy with the instant gratification of a replica
designer bag. There are the understated
individuals who cling to their timeless Chanel padded number, confident in the
knowledge that it is often all one needs to evoke an air of elegance while
there are the lucky few who cement themselves as a member of the fabulously
wealthy by toting the highly coveted Hermes Birkin.

As for me, I'm contemplating the move from Oroton aficionado to connoisseur of Coach. I wonder what that says about me?

Cheeky Fashionistahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287634335436026024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4234121406222946939.post-22899054068717509742013-04-06T12:03:00.000+11:002015-01-11T16:18:47.456+11:00the great divideThe other day I had a sobering experience. Trawling through Chaddy in search of some new clothes for Little Fashionista (thank you Seed Heritage and Witchery Kids!) I stumbled into one of the shops housed in the Chadstone Luxury Precinct, attracted by a divine little clutch (be still my beating heart!) I spied from the doorway. Granted, I was dressed a tad on the casual side - old jeans that may be losing their shape, a less than superb pair of ballet flats and a grey marle knit from what was probably Gorman's first few collections. As a result of my less than sartorial splendour on that particular day I experienced my own slice of Pretty Woman. No, I was not swept off my feet by a wealthy businessman due to my vivacious, carefree but firmly down-to-earth personality and heartbreakingly beautiful smile. I was however treated by two snobby and let me say not all that busy sales assistants as an impoverished leper whose very touch could turn their high-end goodies into leatherlike totes from Target.

Needless to say I left said shop as clutchless as when I entered. Tragic, isn't it? More importantly, I also left feeling like I should limit my shopping experiences to Best & Less and the local Salvos - both of which by the way have provided some truly fab bargains and should never be underestimated.

I came home (with the requisite bottle of Moet to cheer me up) and told hubby about the experience. He was at once thankful (that I didn't buy the clutch) and enlightening, bringing to my attention the disconnect which currently exists between what I wear to work and what I throw on most weekend morning. Like many working mums, I spend a fair amount of dosh to maintain the work wardrobe - the good stuff that I don't wear around grubby, Vegemite smeared faces and snotty noses. And so, as those of us on a fixed income would know, it is often the casual wardrobe that suffers. It is the jeans, the t-shirts, the singlets and the wear anywhere jumpers and jackets that fail to get the attention needed to ensure you look just as good shopping in Miu Miu as you do running a meeting. You spend on the killer pair of corporate heels but your trusty ballet flats are worn well past their use-by date. You don't see a point in dressing up only to find yourself at the end of the day crying over the peanut butter on the sleeve of your T by Alexander Wang. Our wear around the kids wardrobes reflect the motto we decorate our homes with: "Nothing nice till the kids are at least 16 years-old".

And so, I have come to the realisation that I need to put more effort into my wear to the shop basics, not for the snotty sales assistants but for me, to ensure I feel good about myself and the way I present to the world. I have thrown out anything that does not make me feel gorgeous, because it's just as important to feel fabulous in your jeans and boots as it is in your Leona Edmiston frock. Farewell slightly stained t-shirts I used to breastfeed in, au revoir shoes that have lost their shine and jeans that have lost their shape. And lastly, goodbye to anything in grey marle. You're really not my colour.Cheeky Fashionistahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287634335436026024noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4234121406222946939.post-83499397694934551402013-02-27T16:12:00.000+11:002013-02-27T16:12:19.868+11:00a touch of witchery wonder

As shown, The Monique comes in five different colours, but only one size, which according to Metalicus, 'fits most'. And, at $189 for five different looks, I say that's excellent value for money.

For those of you seeking some hands-on advice, head to the Metalicus store at Chadstone the Fashion Capital this Thursday, February 28th and enjoy a styling workshop led by a professional stylist.
Recently a young woman asked my view on the growing trend of gym clothing as fashion. You know, the whole Lorna Jane, lululemon being worn to places that are highly unlikely to stage a spontaneous Zumba class.

My view is this, if you are wearing an outfit more suited to attending a Pump class than visiting your grandparents, you should be heading towards a Pump class. Anything else is simply the fashion equivalent of screaming to the world "CHECK ME OUT!!! I have the most amazing body ever!!!!" Granted, this might actually be the case. So, if you happen to possess a physique so divine you feel the world would be missing out by not getting a glimpse of it, then more power to you. Feel free to get around in skimpy crop tops, a bare midriff and tight leggings. Don't expect anyone to like you though. As parents have been telling their children for centuries - no one likes a show off.

If however, as is more likely to be the case, you are a mere mortal with lumps and bumps like the rest of us, keep in mind that sometimes the kindest thing you can do is exercise a touch of modesty and cover the hell up.

Oh, and in no known universe are leggings pants. End of story.

I am a huge believer in life as an educational journey. Whether it's the books we read, the films we watch or the people we meet, I firmly believe everything and everyone is an opportunity to learn more about our world and ourselves. In this spirit, I grabbed a fashionista friend and we ventured to a Style with Cindy Style and Body Shape Workshop.

The day long workshop focuses on 'The Secrets of Personal Style' which stylist Cindy Newstead has broken down into three main elements: defining your personal style, dressing correctly for your body shape and using colours to enhance your complexion. There was homework to complete for the day, and my students will be thrilled to learn that Ms Kafka did hers at the last possible minute in a nearby cafe, gulping down a latte as she shoved the required work into a dodgy plastic pocket unearthed from the bottom of the cupboard. Yup, it's all about preparation.

There were eight style students in total at the workshop - all women, from their 20s upwards. Each one of us had our own reasons for being there. To be completely honest, I would have liked to have known more about why these other women were there. Maybe it's the yenta in me, but I am intrigued as to what prompts individuals to take a step forward in the fashion stakes. What defining moment has led a woman to hand over a considerable amount of cash in order to be told how to improve the first impression she makes? What causes someone to take such a step in an effort to feel more confident about the person she presents to the world? FYI Cindy, a bottle of bubbly or two wouldn't go astray. Loosen the tongues and get the participants sharing a few stories about what has brought them to that secret room in Chadstone Tower willing to be hauled up in front of a group of strangers and be told the jeans she is wearing are making her arse look big.

I did learn a few things from Cindy. I learnt that my body shape is an 'inverted triangle' (as is my fashionista friend) and that my colour group is 'deep warm'. I also learnt that 'deep warm' is totally different to 'warm deep'- who knew? I must admit however, there was a moment when, watching a young woman being draped in a range of colour swatches by Cindy and her assistant/husband Calvin in an effort to work out "the colours that will harmonise with you and bring your complexion alive", I was suddenly acutely aware of the number of starving children in Africa. That realisation of the slight absurdity and self indulgence of what I was involved in didn't last long however. It was quickly interrupted by a more 'mature' member of the group having a little tantrum because she wasn't happy with the colour group Cindy and Calvin had declared to be most in harmony with her complexion. I guess paying to hear expert advice doesn't always mean you're always willing to listen to expert advice.

And Cindy did give some good advice, most specifically in the area of effective shopping. My favourite hint for the day is as follows: When in the fitting room, put on the outfit you're considering, shut your eyes and then open them. Look straight at your reflection. If something in the outfit, or the outfit itself jumps out at you, it's a problem. Why? Because you should wear your clothes, not the other way around. I also liked Cindy's acknowledgement that while generally speaking one is far better off spending more money on fewer but better quality pieces, cheap and nasty can fill a spot.

Overall, I think the day was a solid learning experience for me. It reminded me that the way I view myself isn't necessarily the way others view me. It also confirmed for me that while a true sense of style is not really something that can be taught, there are some basic guidelines which can help style strugglers make the most of their body shape and complexion. While lacking confidence in what you look like may not be as tragic as the world's starving children, it can greatly impact on the way others view you, and most importantly, how you view yourself.

But in the end, what my day with Cindy confirmed for me is my belief that some rules are meant to be broken. Perhaps that's what style is - an innate knowledge and understanding of these guidelines combined with the confidence to do whatever you damn well please once in a while.

Cheeky Fashionistahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287634335436026024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4234121406222946939.post-25748548733384456372013-01-27T17:08:00.000+11:002013-01-27T17:08:37.873+11:00suck it inThe other day I heard a great description of what I refer to as 'suck-it-in-undies'. "It's like when you clean your house by shoving all the toys, papers and general crap into a cupboard and shut the door. The house may look good for a little while, but eventually you're going to have to open that cupboard door and all that stuff is going to come tumbling back out."

Great analogy, right? Unfortunately, this description was used by a man. To his wife. After she had just purchased her first pair of suck-it-ins. He may as well have said, "Sweetheart, I never want to have sex again."

Euphemistically referred to as 'shapewear', women in the western world have the privilege of being able to wander into any department store and find themselves faced with a mind-boggling range of Spanx, Nancy Ganz and the like to help them in their search for physical perfection - or at least to help them fake it. Even Big W has their Hold Me Tight range.

I am torn about the entire shapewear debate, although to be perfectly honest, it is possible that I am the only one actually debating what is essentially underwear.

There is a part of me that thinks these sort of products simply promote and capitalise on the pressure many women feel to look like a post-Photoshop image of a fifteen year-old girl. They continue the harmful legacy of a media which shouts criticisms at every woman from billboards, websites and magazines; "You are not good enough! Your boobs are too low! Your thighs are too dimpled! Your upper arms resemble the pancake I ate this morning!" I wonder if the women behind these brands have contemplated their role in perpetuating female self-loathing. Is Nancy Ganz in fact a hater? Is Sara Blakely, billionaire inventor of Spanx really some evil, malevolent cackling witch playing on the insecurities of women in order to maintain her place on the Forbes magazine's annual I'm Way, Way, Way Richer Than You List?

sara blakely - inventor of spanx and way, way, way richer than most of you

Then there is a part of me that believes anything that can help me and countless other women feel better about themselves is great. If I feel more confident because I am donning a garment frighteningly similar to a scuba suit under my pencil skirt then I am going to have a greater chance of success on that day and will simply be in a more positive place. True, I would be feeling more positive because in my mind at least I am looking more like that perky breasted, flat tummy fifteen-year-old in soft-focus, but the reality is, allowing my flabby gut to hang out won't solve the world's misogyny, so I may as well do what I can to feel good about myself. Right?

Plus, yay for Sara Blakely. She found a need and she filled it. She did not and does not rely on daddy or hubby's moolah; surely that's a reason to wrap her in the feminist flag, isn't it?

The reality is fashion is political. When you choose to wear something you are proclaiming to the world who you are and some of the beliefs you hold. I guess that's what I find so engaging about the industry.

And to the hubby who shared his great analogy, don't worry Ms Blakely hasn't forgotten you! Presenting the 'Game-Changer'.

manx - spanx for men

Perhaps the game is changing. Perhaps men now have just as much right to feel bad about themselves as women do.

At the end of last year, like many of you, I received an invite to an end of year barbecue. Now, with no dress code anywhere to be seen on the invite, and having never attended this particular annual event before, I assumed it was your traditional Australian summer attire - men in terrible shorts with way too many pockets, a faded Mambo t-shirt or two circa 1993, shiny polyester polo shirts proclaiming the wearers' sporting allegiances, Kmart thongs, Crocs, too tight singlets revealing bra straps and bulges - you know, the usual.

I arrived at said event wearing what I thought was a rather swish kaftan top and a pair of wide leg summer pants. Casual but elegant. Perfect, right? Wrong. Entering the room became one of those moments you have nightmares about. There was no DJ or music of any kind, and yet I swear I heard the screech of a record coming to an abrupt end as heads turned to stare. It is entirely possible there was even a spotlight to highlight my shame. You seen, unbeknownst to me the event was actually formal. We are talking women in cocktail dresses and men in long pants and shirts with collars and cuffs. We are talking wine glasses and silverware.

The question of in what kind of parallel universe are barbecues formal is only superseded by the question why wasn't this aberration of social convention printed on the invitation? Or at the very least, why wasn't the new chic warned about this little oddity? Needless to say, I have just added this wonderful episode to my ever growing list of humiliating moments.

Wanting to spare all others this kind of embarrassment, and with Australia Day - the official day of the barbecue in our great southern land - fast approaching, I thought I would put together a few possible looks to help get you through this patriotic season.

For those of you who have never been brave enough, I highly recommend a trip to Dangerfield. It can be a bit intimidating to enter this little treasure trove for first time thanks to the ultra-cool vibe and salespeople with rainbow coloured hair, but it is worth it, especially if you're after something a bit quirky or pieces with a vintage edge. As an added bonus, at the moment Dangerfield is having a minimum 50% off all sale items both online and in store.

I have always been a huge fan of the sun dress, particularly those with a nod to the 1950s. I purchased this little beauty the other day and I can't wait to wear it with a pair of wedges. Add a thick black belt around the waist and a pair of kitten heels and you're ready for a day at the office, and don't we all love clothes that do double duty.

Simple, easy but still totally gorgeous, this shift dress comes in two colourways - blue (see picture below) and green. The little peter-pan collar is totally adorable and a perfect hemline means you shows just enough leg to be a tad flirty. The lack of defined waistline also means those couple of extra beers will be kept firmly under wraps. Keep in mind the fit of this one is much smaller, especially around the bust area.

I am not a huge playsuit/romper fan. I firmly believe that they are pieces meant for the sandpit, not for grown up women, however I am aware that are those out there that love them. So for those of you prepared to get fully undressed to sit on a toilet, this is a particularly cute romper, and it's on sale for $44 (originally $88).
There is heaps of 'Friends of Couture' items currently on sale at Dangerfield, so if your look is classic with a hint of quirky, check out what's currently available. I love the nautical theme of this little knitted top. Mix it with jeans, a cute pair of shorts or even a little flip skirt this Australia Day.
For those who feel the need to plaster themselves with the Australian flag this year, just promise me you'll avoid those classic t-shirts boldly proclaiming, "Love it or leave it" or anything equally as intellectually complex.

One of my pet peeves - and I admit, I have a few - is a beautifully made up woman with her hair tied up in an old, scraggy elastic band or god forbid, a scrunchie (gasp!). On any given day, in any city in the civilised world you will see far too many women in beautifully tailored suits and a gorgeous pair of heels with their hair tied back as if they were about to scrub someone's toilet. It's all I can do to stop myself grabbing Little Fashionista's Crayola safety scissors and hacking off the offending band and in the process giving the woman in question a quite drastic haircut. Unfortunately, for women who prefer long locks there have been limited options for effective but elegant and affordable solutions... until now!

Now, I know I did a bit of Mecca Cosmetica worship in my last post, but I am so excited about these simple little beauties, I felt it was worth the double-up. Mecca has brought out a range of hair ties complete with metallic coated cuffs in gold, rose gold and silver. What's more, they come in cute boxed gift-sets so you can help your more fashion-challenged friends polish their ponytails and create a sleek and sophisticated do! Plus, at only $32.00 a set, they are a bit of a bargain.
Now, this may not sound like a big deal to some of you, but those like me who have spent years hiding behind a mask of expensive imported cosmetics will understand how facing the big wide world sans 'enhancement' required some serious inner strength and courage.

I'm not sure exactly what brought on my decision to confront the world a bit more naked than I normally do. Perhaps it was a desire to lead a more authentic life of sorts - even if only for a few weeks, perhaps it was wanting to make the whole getting dressed process that little bit simpler and quicker, or perhaps it was the realisation that in 40+ degrees, whatever one slaps on is destined to be sweat off anyway. Whatever the reason, this little experiment has helped me realise what is vital in my skincare routine.

I have narrowed the absolutely necessities down to four key items, all from one of my favourite places - Mecca Cosmetica. For those who have not yet experienced Mecca - I highly recommend you do so. The staff are amazingly knowledgeable about all skincare and cosmetic matters, there is a huge range of brands and products to choose from, and most importantly, because of the range of brands available staff can genuinely recommend what's best for you, your skin and your needs - they are not simply pushing the brand they work for.

So, what four key items do I want with me on a desert island?

Little Fashionista is my pride and joy; she truly makes my heart sing. However, the change my body experienced carrying her is the reason why I now firmly believe that Swimwear Galore should have an open bar.

Today’s excursion to purchase both LF and myself swimsuits was, in a word, mortifying. Not so much for her. A cute little pink and white polka dot Speedo one-piece and an adorable Pucci inspired tankini from Funkita, and LF was done. Then came mummy’s turn.

“You’re quite chesty, aren’t you? What cup size are you, DD? E? Oh, none of the ones you’ve chosen will come close to fitting. (awkward giggle) What size bottoms? You used to be an 8? Not anymore I’m afraid! More likely a 10, possibly even a 12 with those hips.” Awesome. Thank you 18 year-old sales assistant. If you could just say it a touch louder. I’m pretty sure there are people shopping in your Fitzroy store that haven’t heard you.

Well-meaning friends have recommended taking ‘selfies’ of myself in various bathers to get a more objective view of how I look in each set. Bad move. There is nothing like a photo of yourself under the harsh neon light of a dressing room, sans make-up and hair done, in bathers that don’t really fit you properly to send you running for the Xanax. Add to this the fact that most of the women surrounding you in the dressing room seem to be about twenty years your junior and a size two, with their most serious swimsuit-related concern being, “Do I get it in the tangerine or the cerulean?”, makes the experience the ultimate confidence destroyer.

In the end however, thanks to some excellent sales people, I discovered there are in fact some amazingly beautiful bathers available to us “chesty” women. I walked away with a beautiful set from Jets by Jessika Allen as well as one from Baku.

What I originally took as offensive was actually a highly trained salesperson being honest about my body and what would best flatter me – something I now greatly appreciate. A word of advice for shoppers – set aside at least a couple of hours to ensure you don’t feel rushed, go somewhere which specialises in swimwear and has an abundance of knowledgeable and helpful staff to assist you, take a friend whose opinion you trust and be prepared to spend at least $200 a pair. Like with many other essentials, good, well-fitting bathers don’t come cheap.

Oh, and skip the open bar. Leave that for afterwards. Trust me, you'll need it.
In It's a Girl Thing Lysa Kiely has created a pink paradise for girls of all ages - a treasurer trove of girly gifts and bits and bobs.

Locally produced crochet coin purses and hair clips lie next to glam mirror finished jewellery boxes (couldn't resist picking one up for myself!). Unusual but elegant homewares as well as indulgent bath and body products make leaving this adorable little cottage without pulling out the Visa a difficult task indeed.

It's a Girl Thing houses a number of different rooms, each with an individual theme of sorts. Some areas are for the young and young at heart with an array of fairy and ballerina costumes as well as furry little friends to keep the younger princesses happy. There are also rooms dedicated to the more adult woman, complete with colourful silky summer mini dresses and a range of fun costume jewellery.

For those looking for more than a bit of a shop, It's a Girl Thing offers personalised tailored weekends away - with Lysa and her crew taking care of as much or as little of the organising as your heart desires. They can organise bus collection and travel to San Remo, accommodation for up to 18, a personal chef, pamper sessions and even Burlesque classes for the slightly more adventurous.

For further info, check out https://www.facebook.com/itsagirlthingSanRemo

And men, don't be frightened to head into this sherbet hued land to purchase your favourite lady a gift or two, Lysa assures me that It's a Girl Thing is "boy-friendly" too!
I vaguely remember the first time I watched Annie Hall. I loved everything about Diane Keaton's character. I loved her distinct way of speaking, her neurosis and of course, her style.

Ties have long since been part of my wardrobe. Nothing is cooler or sexier than a woman looking confident in a touch of androgynous wear.

Hollywood's history is littered with style icons who finished their outfits off with a necktie. There are even those who were brave enough to go the full tuxedo, daring this patriarchal world to try and stop them.
Some of today's hottest Hollywood women have also displayed a penchant for the necktie. Not surprisingly, we still see these classic accessories swung around the necks of those women known for their tendency to challenge traditional assumptions of female beauty.
I love the srength communicated by a woman in a necktie. Wear with a crisp white shirt and team with jeans and a pair of brogues for a casual look, or team with a pencil skirt and a killer pair of heels for work.
Like many other fashion devotees I love a good heel. As a member of the more petite portion of society, I need a good heel. However, there is a point at which an elegant pump or even stiletto stops being the finishing piece of a stunning ensemble and becomes plain stupid. If you are wobbling, hobbling, stumbling, if you’re in danger of losing your balance then the heel of your shoe is too high and rather than remembering your killer shoes, most will be more likely to remember the chick who ended up sprawled face down at the bottom of the escalator. In fact, they won’t need to remember you, they can just check out the latest uploads to the “Embarrassing Nightclub Photos” Facebook page. I am a huge fan of wedges – they can provide height, while still being reasonably comfortable. But again, keep it within reason. Overdo it and you end up looking like a reject from The Brady Bunch Goes to the Circus.

One of the greatest parts of being a High School teacher is that you get to meet some extraordinary young people. This year I was privileged to meet and teach the amazingly talented Samantha Guss. It was clear from the beginning of the year that Samantha was a young woman of style, but it wasn't until later in the year that I realised what an incredible young designer I had been teaching all year.

If this is what the girl can do in Year 12, I can't wait to see what the next few years holds for her!
Over the past two days Chadstone the Fashion Capital has once again cemented itself as *the* Melbourne shopping centre for the fashion conscious by hosting a Spring Racing Style Bar, providing FREE 15 minute styling sessions full of tips to help look fabulous for the upcoming spring racing carnival.

Ashley from Burberry Beauty at David Jones was providing makeovers, noting that race-goers this season would be wearing bright lips in everything from fire-engine reds to intense plum colours. If you're going to go with this trend, stick with smokey eyes in neutral tones. Avoid pairing bringht lips with coloured eyeshadow unless the tent you're heading for is the big top.
As every girl knows, a bad hair day can ruin even the best outfit, so many were flocking to the amazing Campell Ritchie who was tending to tresses of all lengths and colours and giving advice on how to ensure your hair lasts as long as you do on race days.

Melbourne Milliner Melissa Jackson was on hand to help choose the perfect headpieces to go with race day outfits, while stylists Franco Schifilliti and Anika Walker were giving individual expert advice about how to marry personal style with on-trend, showstopping looks.
Franco emphasised that 'co-ordinating' does not mean 'matching'. Would-be fashionistas should be looking achieve a "total balance" with their look. To do this, Franco recommends never combining more than three colours in a single outfit. Anika and Franco agree that this season is all about colour, colour and more colour (yay!) along with a healthy dose of prints.
I must admit, not a piece I ever would have chosen myself, but I guess that's the point of a style bar - to push us out of our comfort zone and into a whole other world of fashion possibilities!
We've just seen Melbourne's Spring Fashion Week and as I type the Perth Fashion Festival is underway. Melbourne's Spring Racing Carnival is certainly a reason to head to the shops and discover what is on offer. But for Year 12 students (and their teachers!), Spring is also about graduation ceremonies, dinners and a whole raft of other events associated with the end of the school year.

For those young ladies about to graduate from the clutches of High School, the challenge of what to wear to these functions can be a difficult one. Many seek something youthful and fashionable, but understand that this is not the occasion for leather mini-skirts and mid-drift tops. How to meet the modesty criteria without looking like you are swathed in your mother's hand-me-downs can be a difficult task.

So, in an effort to help all the wonderful young ladies I am lucky enough to teach this year, I have searched around and come up with a few options for those seeking something stylish that won't make daddy blush.

I adore this Ted Baker dress. Its has a vintage feel thanks to its cinched waist and full skirt. The floral print gives it quite a prim feel, but that is offset by the sweetheart neckline. The book-a-holic in me loves the fact that the print resembles pages torn from an old-style botanical guide.

This 'Spliced Dress' from Country Road is a clean, modern look that is available in two colourways. And just because I'm kind of obsessed by Thurley at the moment and because lace is experiencing a massive comeback, my final suggestion is the 'Lady Lace' dress. Made from fine French lace, this exquisite and very ladylike design features a full skirt accentuated by layers of featherweight tulle. Perfect for a twenty-first century fairytale princess.

I officially have a super-sized crush on Penny McCarthy, Associate Fashion Editor of Vogue Australia. I should let you know that I develop crushes on random people quite easily and for no apparent reason, however in this case there are some pretty good reasons.

Reason one:

"Fashion doesn't have to be expensive to be fabulous."

Sitting at the Vogue Australia Style Workshop at Chadstone the Fashion Capital yesterday, I was acutely aware of my mortgage, kids' private school fees and all those other lovely little costs that relentlessly eat away at my savings account. And so, I was totally thrilled to hear Ms McCarthy share these words of wisdom. In fact, lots of what was on show were totally affordable ways of updating your wardrobe.
Reason two:

"Tailoring is the backbone of your wardrobe."

I am a girl who likes her tailoring. I am a firm believer that unless one has been blessed with the body of a supermodel, which unfortunately I have not (thanks mum and dad!) good tailoring is vital. Tailoring can help give you shape and lend your outfit a touch of elegance. This rule of thumb was clear in the 'City Luxe' trend on show.

Reason three:

"When mixing prints, keep within the same colour palette."

You would have to be living in a cave to not be aware that prints are on trend this season. However, despite the claim that there are no rules when it comes to fashion, the reality is, if you want to avoid looking like one of the Von Trapp children who has had their latest outfit made from hideous old curtains, BE CAREFUL. The right use of prints can be amazing, gorgeous, inspiring. The wrong use can cause onlookers to fall into an uncontrolable seizure.

I should have been focused on the runway. There was so much to see - cobalt blues, graphic prints, embellishments. But I have never been very good at doing what I am meant to do. Here I was - first assignment as official blogger for Chadstone 2012 Spring/Summer season and I was more focused on those in my immediate surroundings than the lithe and perfectly coiffed beings floating down the runway in the latest fashions.

I guess for me fashion has always been about wearability. So, while some six foot tall size two glamazon might look amazing in something, the stark reality is even if we purchase the identical items, most of us mere mortals will look vastly different than the walking mannequin being paraded before us. So for the Cheeky Fashionista, while the Vogue Australia Runway Show presented some breathtaking creations, ever the pragmatist, I was more intrigued by what 'real people' were wearing. This was revealed in spades at the Australian Designer Cocktail Party.

Chadstone, Vogue Australia and Laurent-Perrier put together an outstanding 'do' - an elegant and classy club smack bang in the middle of a shopping centre complete with a DJ spinning the decks. Gorgeous looking hors d'oeuvres, lovely Laurent-Perrier bubbly and of course, a smattering of Melbourne's beautiful people.

However amongst the beautiful people and the bubbly were also some who confused fashion with style.

Now let me say straight away that I am certainly not the most attractive human being to ever walk the earth. I am uber-short, too rounded in some areas, and not rounded enough in others. My nose is too wide, my jaw too square and thanks to an often incomprehensible love of teaching, I lack the means to robe myself in the labels I covet. But I do my best. And most importantly, I don't kid myself.

Lycra mini-skirts might be in vogue, but I am acutely aware of the fact that thanks to short and relatively stubby legs if I chose to don one I would look less like Rachel Zoe and more like a slutty oompa loompa. Likewise, while I adore the embellishments being used by designers like Sass & Bide and Manning Cartell this season, I need to be selective with my use of it to ensure I don't end up looking like something one should hang on their Christmas tree this December.

That's why I love this little number:

sass & bide

Separates always appeal to me, because while I can't see myself stepping out in the full ensemble, one of the two pieces would certainly work as a way to update a classic other half. The top half would work beautifully as a companion to an existing pair of black pants, skirt or even a pair of jeans.

Likewise, these gorgeous pieces from Thurley:
Adolfo Dominguez is a Spanish label that has been around since the 1970s and now has over 600 boutiques globally. Its Chadstone store opened late in 2011. I view runways and the images designer bring us as something we should take inspiration from, not slavishly follow. Truly stylish individuals borrow from the latest looks, knowing what works for them and what doesn't. Truly stylish individuals don't look like walking advertisements for a particular label, they advertise themselves and their own unique sense of style.

I am the first to admit that I have limited talents. However, one of my few saving graces is my ability to be completely honest about what someone should and should not wear. So, last week I combined the power of Chadstone with my abilities and joined a friend in search of some key wardrobe items to complement her new slender physique.

Now, I must first tell you that Ms Eva is an absolutely stunning woman - both inside and out. Chestnut hair, beautiful eyes and one of the most kind and generous individuals I know. She works, runs her own business and is a complete supermum. Ms Eva was also in desperate need of jeans. The ones she had been wearing were being kept up by a thick belt and doing that baggy arse thing that was clearly the result of her weight loss, but none too attractive.

Off to Just Jeans we went. Ms Eva tried on a range of styles and brands (thank you awesome customer service assistants!) - Levi, Mavi, Lee, bootleg, skinny, straight leg.

In the end Ms. Eva selected a gorgeous indigo Mavi pair. Firm where they should be with just the right amount of give. Seeing Ms Eva in these jeans reaffirmed my belief that the right pair of jeans is all a woman needs to feel amazing about herself and her body.

The Year 10 corridor starts smelling like freshly sprayed deodorant and 2. Primary Schools send out flyers announcing their upcoming Father's Day stalls.

This week I have encountered both. So, I think it's time to focus on what men are going to be wearing this season.

As a Melbournian I am well aware that black is a staple in our city, but this year I encourage men to consider greys and navys - still dark, still classic, but a tad softer. As an added bonus, you can team it with a crisp white shirt and you won't look like a waiter or a sales assistant at MYER.

jack london baskerville suit

Over the last year hubby has become a huge Jack London fan. They use a range of interesting fabrics to compliment fine tailoring. Their cuts seem to suit the more... ahem, 'slender' man. The baskerville suit is done in a herringbone tweed, perfect for those looking for a slightly thicker material and a jacket they can wear over jeans for a casual but still beautifully put together look. All pieces are sold separately, so if you're not a fan of the whole three-piece suit thing you can ditch the vest. But before you do consider how you could wear the items individually with other pieces in your wardrobe. Would the vest look amazing with a pair of plain black pants and a shirt in a playful print?

Still corporate, but sans suit, I love this look:

jack london daventry mod shirt

Another Jack London, I love the colour of the shirt and the thin, plain tie. Totally hot.

Hunting for something more casual? The number of places one can purchase jeans these days is awe-inspiring, if not incredibly confusing. I am a girl who likes shops that specialise and I favour the places I know I am going to be offered knowledgeable and consistent service and assistance. And in the vast area of denim, there is no place like Just Jeans. Great range (they now carry Mavi), and staff who know the cuts, the fabrics and are able to match your needs and wants to the most appropriate choice.

This season it's all about coloured denim. And while I it takes a great deal of courage for a man to hit the streets in pastel pink pants, a slightly stronger shade is a good option.

just jeans coloured fashion super skinny jean in shiraz

A final word of advice for those heading out to shop for dad, hubby or boyfriend and for those men going out to bulk up their wardrobe for Spring - lose the socks. This season men are flashing a bit of ankle skin. Just let the kids know before they hit those Father's Day stalls.
